Paint gutters and downpipes

Follow these tips to make painting gutters and downpipes easy.

Prepare

  • First up, ensure you have all the right equipment for the job.
  • Get your area ready by giving it a wash to remove any dirt or surface contamination.
  • Then lay down and attach drop sheets to protect surrounding surfaces.
  • If you're painting onto a bare surface, contact Wattyl Assist (132 101) for correct priming instructions.
  • Scrape off any loose paint and sand the surface using 180-grit sandpaper or block.
  • Then brush or rinse off all the sanding dust and let it dry completely.

Paint

  • Give your can of Wattyl Solagard a thorough stir.
  • We'll be using a medium or small brush to apply the paint.
  • When painting gutters and downpipes, it's best to paint from join to join. Start with the gutters and paint horizontally to each join. Then work your way down each downpipe. Always finishing the brushstroke towards the wet paint edge.
  • Allow the first coat to dry for 2 hours, then apply a second coat* evenly for added protection.
  • After you've finished painting, clean your equipment with water, avoiding drains and waterways.

Solagard is touch dry in 30 minutes and can be recoated after 2 hours. Figures are quoted at 25°C and 50% humidity. Drying will take longer at lower temperatures or higher humidity.
